Youtube App Removed From Apple's iOS 6 Platform

Apple iOS 6

Apple made the latest beta version of iOS 6 available to developers yesterday and the Youtube app wasn't present in the release. The crew over at Engadget asked Apple about why the Youtube application has been removed and it turns out that Apple's licensing agreement with Google has expired.

Sadly , that means that the Youtube application isn't currently available in iOS 6. You can still access Youtube through the Safari browser, but that doesn't offer the same expierence. Those running previous versions of Apple's operating system shouldn't worry because the Youtube application will still be available on their devices.

Potential iOS 6 users will be glad to hear that Google are working on a new Youtube application built specifically for Apple's new platform. However, we don't know when it'll be available or if Apple will even allow the new application onto the platform.

Youtube has become a big part of everyday life and it'll be tragic if the only way to access Youtube on iOS 6 is through the Safari Browser. However, we doubt that Apple would ever let this happen, let alone Google, so we're sure that the new application will be ready in time for the launch of iOS 6.

Apple's iOS 6 platform comes with a whole host of new features which you can read about by clicking here. 3G presume iOS 6 will launch on the iPhone 5 and will become available on other devices after Apple's new iPhone has hit stores , which is expected to happen in September or October.

Toshiba Launching Quad-Core AT300 Tablet

Toshiba AT300

Toshiba AT300
Toshiba AT300

Toshiba have unveiled the AT300 tablet which runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich and has a quad-core processor.

The new tablet is the successor to the Toshiba AT200, which received a decent review from us at 3G but failed to take off with consumers. Assuming its successor has the same build-quality and features its possible Toshiba will see sales take off.

The specification of the Toshiba AT300 include a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, which provides amazing power while at the same time keeping battery consumption low. The chip will enable amazing gaming performance and multi-media playback, while also rapid  multi-tasking.

The AT300 has a 10.1 inch LED touch-screen which runs at a resolution of 1280*720 pixels and is made from Gorilla Glass which ensures its scratch-resistant. Other features include 1GB of RAM, a 5 mega-pixel camera and a front-facing 2 mega-pixel camera.

The Toshiba AT300 is set to launch in the UK in June and will be priced at  £329 for a 16GB model or £379 for the 32GB version.

Feature set summary for Toshiba AT300 review

Plenty of storage – a full 32GB onboard, plus a five-megapixel snapper, plus a front-facing two-megapixel model for video calls.

Style and handling summary for Toshiba AT300 review

The AT300 is fatter than its forerunner, the AT200, but because it’s wider it actually looks slimmer. Build quality is nice, with just a tad of flex in the brushed aluminium chassis.

Battery power summary for Toshiba AT300 review
Pretty average for a tablet of this size – you get about six hours if you’re watching video.

Performance summary for Toshiba AT300 review
With a quad-core CPU lurking under the bonnet, there’s plenty of power for 3D games and the processor ensures a good degree of futureproofing. Mind you, the Asus Nexus 7 has the same amount of power at half the cost…

User friendliness summary for Toshiba AT300 review
The operating system, Android Ice Cream Sandwich, runs beautifully, and the touchscreen proves responsive, making it simple to find your way around the net, through menus and to play with games and apps.

Full Review and Specification for the Toshiba AT300

Toshiba’s last release was the thinnest tablet in the world – the Toshiba AT200. This moniker helped it to stand out in an increasingly busy marketplace, even if it wasn’t as impressive as the new iPad or the Asus Transformer Prime. Now Toshiba has brought out the slightly chunkier AT300 – it’s more powerful, but is that enough?

Looks familiar

As soon as you see the Toshiba AT300, it’s obvious it is very familiar to its forerunner the AT200, even though it has a bigger 10.1in display. There is a black edge around the screen, and the reverse is in a smart silver brushed aluminium. It looks good, even though there is some flex in the body – we’d want to put it in a padded cover for taking out and about.

There’s a docking port along the bottom edge of the device (if you want a charging dock you’ll need to buy it separately). There’s also a micro USB port for transferring files to and from a PC, a Mini HDMI port to connect the device to the TV and an SD card slot should you wish to expand the already generous 32GB of onboard memory.

Next to the power button is a lock key, which prevents the display switching between portrait and landscape – it can also be used to mute the sound.

The operating system is Ice Cream Sandwich Android, which has not really been fiddled with by Toshiba. This is an excellent mobile OS, with lots of space for shortcuts and loads of widgets (now it is possible to expand and shrink them fit on your desktops). There’s speedy access to recent apps, as well as a useful notifications tab that lets you know when emails and other important messages have arrived.

The device is light and comfortable to hold for some time, if you’re playing games, for instance, and feels slim because it has a wider girth. However, a neat 7in device – the Google Nexus or AT200 maybe – might be preferable if you’re out and about a lot.

Screen star

The display measures 10.1 inches – it’s roomy and very responsive. Browsing the web is a joy – but it’s when messing around with apps or playing with games that it really comes into its own. Even the most fast-paced games ran beautifully thanks to the screen, which responded to all our swipes and pinches.

The display is not as bright as it could be, which is an issue when viewing in direct sunlight. Out of the sun, though, it shows off films and TV programmes well – colours stay true even when you tilt the device, and the screen glass is solid enough to avoid distortion if it is pressed.

The screen also gets a boost from Toshiba’s Resolution+ setting, which makes photos and films more vibrant. Skin tones are warmer and outdoor snaps show bright, with lovely blue oceans and skies in our holiday pictures. There’s plenty of space to store all these movies and photos – with 32GB of onboard storage, with the option to expand via the SD memory card slot.

Power games

The powerful quad-core chip will delight games fans – it can handle any game you throw at it. Even complicated 3D games ran beautifully smoothly – and it’s futureproof too. Mind you, you can pick up the Asus Nexus 7, which has the same amount of power – for half the price.

Battery life is important if you’re always taking your device out and about – the battery life for the AT300 is pretty average – you’ll get about six hours of video viewing, so you might want to carry a charger with you.

Snapper

There’s a five-megapixel snapper onboard, which also boasts LED flash. Snaps came out a tad fuzzy when shown on the monitor or TV, but they’re okay. If you want to make Skype calls, there’s a front-facing two-megapixel snapper.

Our conclusion

The tablet market is remarkably full – but the Toshiba AT300 does boast quad-core power and a really responsive 10.1-inch touchscreen. It’s a good choice for apps and games fans. The display is not as bright as that on rivals such as the Apple iPad, but Toshiba’s Resolution+ feature makes a difference – plus there’s plenty of onboard storage.

Blackberry 10 Smartphones To Have 1.5 Ghz Dual-Core Processors

BlackberryBlackberry 10

Blackberry Logo

Blackberry 10 smartphones were due to launch their Blackberry 10 operating system at the end of this year , but 3G has since learnt that the platform launch has now been delayed until the first quarter of 2013.

New information that's now appeared online , thanks to the guys over at BlackberryOS, has given us more insight into what to expect from Blackberry's next-gen smartphones. Apparently, when they launch Blackberry 10 smartphones will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.

Snapdragon's S4 processor will bring a huge amount of power to Blackberry 10 smartphones because it's a dual-core chip running at 1.5 Ghz. The performance is well above that of HTC One X , which itself is a real powerhouse !

Blackberry smartphones have always been quite underpowered compared to other premium smartphones , so the announcement that it'll include this new processor is very good news. Interestingly, Qualcomm stated that their new S4 Pro chip won't launch until the second half of 2012. so is it possible this is when we'll see the first Blackberry 10 smartphones become available ?

The only other information we currently know about Blackberry 10 smartphones is that full touch-screen devices will run at a resolution 1280*720 pixels, while QWERTY devices will run at 720*720 pixels. RIM have also confirmed that current Blackberry smartphones won't be upgradable to the new platform and it looks like Blackberry might also license the OS to other manufacturers.

Android 4.0.4 Hitting Sony's 2011 Xperia Smartphones

Android 4.0.4SonySony Ericsson Xperia

Android Logo
Sony released  Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) for its 2011 Xperia range a couple of months ago and now they've announced that Android 4.0.4 will begin rolling out to the smartphones this week.

The Android 4.0.4 update improves on the original version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich because it includes a number of bug fixes, improvements and performance tweaks.

The first smartphones to receive the upgrade will be the Xperia arc, Xperia arc S, Xperia neo, Xperia neo V, Xperia mini, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Xperia ray. After that the Xperia mini pro, Xperia neo L and Live with Walkman will be receiving the Android 4.0.4 update.

You'll already need to have installed Android Ice Cream Sandwich before you can upgrade , so those still running Gingerbread should connect their smartphone to their PC to upgrade. Those who've already installed Android 4.0 should receive an update notification when Android 4.0.4 becomes available for their smartphone.

As always those with operator branded handsets will have to wait until their operator makes the update available. 3G will keep you updated on when each operator rolls out Android 4.0.4 for Sony's 2011 Xperia smartphones.

Sony Xperia J - Affordable Android Smartphone Leaked

SonySony Xperia J

Sony Xperia J
We first heard about Sony's Xperia J back in July when it was leaked online thanks to some certification spotted on the Indonesian Postel Regularity site. Now the smartphone has appeared once again after more details and pictures surfaced over at Mobile-Review.

The Sony Xperia J is an affordable Android smartphone that sits at the bottom of Sony's next-generation Xperia range , which includes the Xperia S, Xperia U and Xperia P. However, it still adopts the same stylish design and also comes at a very attractive price-point (£120).

The specification of the Sony Xperia J includes a 4 inch LCD display running at a resolution of 480x854 pixels, which is more than good-enough for the vast majority of smartphone users. Powering the Xperia J is a single-core 1 GHz processor which teams up with 512MB of RAM.

Other features of the Sony Xperia J include a 5 mega-pixel rear-facing camera, a front-facing camera of unknown resolution and support for 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and microSD cards. The smartphone runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a decent bonus for an affordable smartphone.

The Sony Xperia J is expected to be showcased at this years IFA which takes place in Berlin on August 31st. We're not sure when it'll hit the stores but we shouldn't think it'll be too long after its unveiling.

Bluetooth Smart To Accelerate Spread Of Bluetooth !

BluetoothBluetooth 4.0

Bluetooth Smart
Bluetooth has become a must-have feature of any modern smartphone and became available in 5 billion devices back in 2010. Since then the wireless technology has continued to grow and the launch of Bluetooth 4.0 with Bluetooth Smart looks set to accelerate it's growth further.

New research, conducted by ABI Research, suggest that the Bluetooth will spread to 20 billion devices before the end of 2017. This growth will mainly be due to the spread of Bluetooth 4.0 in mobile devices and tablets.

Bluetooth 4.0 is expected to spread Bluetooth technology to a second wave of devices thanks to the lower power consumption of the latest version. The power consumption is significantly lower thanks to a new low pulsing method of Bluetooth.

The lower power consumption of Bluetooth opens the possibility of putting the technology on more affordable devices , which previously may not have had the battery power to run Bluetooth.

Additionally, Bluetooth 4.0 also enables Bluetooth Smart, which is another factor that will increase the adoption of Bluetooth. Bluetooth Smart takes advantage of the lower power consumption of Bluetooth 4.0 to enable peripherals to be connected to your smartphone.

For example, the Samsung Galaxy SIII already has a number of fitness Bluetooth accessories , which can monitor your pulse, heartbeat, blood pressure and much more. A number of Bluetooth 4.0 devices are already on the market including the Galaxy SIII, New iPad, iPhone 4S and the Mac Mini.

Over the next couple of years we can expect to see a whole host Bluetooth Smart accessories hitting the market with the technology becoming even more prevalent. As always 3G will bring you all the latest in mobile news including the  latest in Bluetooth technology.

Orange Slash iPhone Sim-Only Prices !

 Apple iPhoneOrange

Orange

SIM-Only deals are becoming more and more popular with people willing to keep their smartphones for longer while they wait for the next technological leap-forward. This is particularly true for iPhone owners who often wait to upgrade to the next iPhone !

Orange have now tried to capitalize on this trend by reducing the price of their iPhone (microSIM) Sim-Only deals.

Orange have taken £5 off selected 12 month SIM-only deals which now means you can get 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of mobile data for just £10.50 a month. Alternatively , those looking for more minutes can opt for the £15,50 a month deal which gets you 600 minutes and the same unlimited texts and 500MB of mobile data.

One thing that users should note is that if your iPhone is locked to another operator you'll have to ring them and get it unlocked which costs £20. 3G really hope that this cost is removed in the future because we feel that after a 24 month contract users have already paid enough to their original operator.

Apple Registers New Russian Distribution Arm, May Soon Sell Direct

Apple is poised to start distributing its own products in Russia, after it emerged that the company has worked with local sources to register “Apple Rus,” a new distribution arm capable of…

The Center for Design Innovation shared the tape of a rare speech recently that I thought was a fascinating snapshot of the transitional period from mainframe to personal computing. Jobs is typically charismatic in the speech, begging the attending designers to help Apple make computers that actually look good.
“By 1986, we’re going to ship more computers that automobiles in this country,” Jobs said, adding that 3 million would be sold in 1983 alone.
“One of the reasons I’m here is that I need your help,” says Jobs. “If you look at computers, they look like garbage. All the great product designers are off designing automobiles or off designing buildings. But, hardly any of them are designing computers.”
“We’re going to sell those 3 million computers whether they look like a piece of shit, or they look great,” he goes on. “It doesn’t really matter because people are going to suck this stuff up no matter what they look like. And it doesn’t really cost any more money to make them look great.”
Jobs stresses that computers are going to be this ‘new object’ that are going to be in our work and home environments. “And we have a shot to put a great object there…and if we don’t, we’re going to put another piece of junk object there.”
He also touches on the iPhone computing revolution, saying that “one of these days, when you have portable computers with radios stuck in them, you’ll be walking around Aspen and [retrieve your messages].”
He also talked about an MIT experiment that would eventually become Google’s StreetView feature:
MIT came out to Aspen 4 or 5 years ago…with a truck with a scanner on it, and they went down every single street and every single intersection…and photographed all of the buildings. And got this computer and a video disc and hooked them up together. And on the video screen, you see yourself looking down the street. And you touch the screen and there are arrows on the screen “walk forward” and it’s just like walking down the street…it’s an electronic map.

Jobs goes on to disect and decimate the design paradigms of the day and describe how they could be adapted to computers  It’s a great listen.

Facebook launches new app.

4039942772_0a7f3a49ac_b
For the longest time, Facebook’s iOS apps have been terrible. On the iPhone and iPad, the app utilised a UIWebView interface, taking longer than it should to load, notifications were intermittent and the app crashed frequently. However, that’s all about to change with launch of version 5.0 for iOS, which is now available on the App Store.
Facebook’s new native iOS update (for both iPhone and iPad) isn’t just quicker, the company says that it has been built from the ground up and twice as fast as the previous version when launching it on your iDevice.
The app does away with the web views that have plagued the app from day one, causing it to perform worse than comparable apps. They have been replaced by code that uses the native elements of iOS instead. As a result, scrolling through your News Feed will be buttery smooth and you can interact with photos instantly, using gestures to open and close.
Content loads immediately and notifications register right away, so you will no longer have to keep refreshing or force-close of the app to register them.
When new stories come in, they are immediately displayed in a banner notification which, when tapped, will automatically load those updates. You’re not going to need to keep manually refreshing to see updates, you’ll just be notified the minute they come in.
Because Facebook loads all content automatically, a simple tap on a photo opens it immediately. Finished looking at that photo? Close it with a simple swipe.
FB IMAGE 520x780 Facebook launches native app for iPhone and iPad, rebuilt from ground up to be twice as fast  FB Image 2 520x780 Facebook launches native app for iPhone and iPad, rebuilt from ground up to be twice as fast
Facebook’s new app is its first update since April 2,  but in that time the social network has continued to boom.
In a fresh set of statistics which the company shared with The Next Web, Facebook highlights the fact that 543 million monthly active users used the company’s mobile products in June 2012 alone, with the social network now supported on more than 7,000 diffeent mobile devices (which either access or load its mobile site every day).
If people aren’t using the app, they are accessing Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store. In fact, both apps saw 146 million people to both marketplaces over the last 30 days.

New in Microsoft

Yesterday, Google announced its YouTube Elections Hub in the build up to the 2012 Presidential Election, and today Microsoft follows suit with its own Elections offering for Xbox 360 users.
The computing giant has teamed up with a host of third parties to launch the new service, with Election 2012 on Xbox Live letting US-based users watch and interact with live election coverage of the presidential debates. They’ll also be able to learn about the candidates and issues at hand from Face the Facts USA, register to vote through Rock the Vote, and participate in daily polling from YouGov.
Additionally, NBCNews.com will be rolling out election programming each day, drawing in viewers with the latest news and analysis about the election. The first wave of content will be broadcast from next Monday, August 27.
Viewers will be able to interact, in real-time, throughout the three scheduled presidential debates, and view live feeds from the Republican and Democratic national conventions. Additional original programming will be featured through the Election Hub too.
“Technology has been a transformative force in politics during recent years,” says Fred Humphries, vice president of government affairs at Microsoft.
“The launch of the Election 2012 Hub on Xbox LIVE marks another exciting moment of change,” he continues. “This platform will innovate how some voters engage in the political process, and it provides greater access to valuable information such as the perspectives of youth at our town halls, newscasts and voter registrations. By bringing the elections directly into the home through this Xbox platform, we hope to encourage greater participation in the democratic process this fall.”
We’ve already seen a slew of other top tech companies get involved in the elections build up so far, with Amazon’s Heat Map letting you see political reading tastes by state, and Facebook jumping into bed with CNN to launch its ‘I’m Voting App’.
Indeed, we’ll likely see many more initiatives leading up to the big day on November 6.

Microsoft changes our logo

Microsoft has a brand new logo, its first since 1987

Microsoft might be overhauling its Windows and Windows Phone operating systems this year but that’s not all, because for the first time in 25 years, it has launched a brand new corporate logo, which looks to display a much more modern image for the company moving forward.
Screen Shot 2012 08 23 at 14.48.09 520x138 Microsoft has a brand new logo, its first since 1987
In an interview with the Seattle Times,  Microsoft’s general manager of brand strategy says that the new logo is intended to “signal the heritage but also signal the future — a newness and freshness,” and utilises the Segoe font, a typeface that has been used in Microsoft’s software and branding for a number of years.
It’s also the first time that Microsoft has included a symbol in its logo, expressing “the company’s diverse portfolio of products.”
The Seattle Times says that the new logo will begin its rollout today, appearing on Microsoft.com and the company’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.
It will also make an appearance in new TV adverts released by the company in the next few weeks and will likely be plastered all over Microsoft’s upcoming products and services coming later this year.
